Ahoskie tax rate unchanged

AHOSKIE – Without much fanfare, including a lack of comment from the public when given a chance to speak out, the Ahoskie Town Council has approved its Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget.

The unanimous vote came the regularly scheduled council meeting on June 10.

The property tax rate remains at 81 cents (per $100 of value) in the newly adopted budget.

In the General Fund, all revenues remain in line with the past year’s budget. All other fees, including water and sewer, remain the same.

There is no cost of living increase for the town’s staff.

The FY 2025-26 budget lists $6,617,458 in its General Fund and $4,351,398 in the Enterprise Fund (public utilities).

The Ahoskie Police Department will receive the lion’s share ($2,191,194) of the General Fund budget. Administration ($766,808), Environmental Protection ($748,095), Fire Department ($709,879), Streets ($359,580), Public Works ($349,223), and Cultural & Recreational ($225,217) are also among the top-funded departments.

The town will apply $537,913 of taxpayer money to make its annual debt payments.

Property taxes ($2,382,846) and local option sales tax ($1,511,259) are the main sources of revenue for the new budget. Other top sources of revenue are garbage charges ($659,000), refunds/reimbursements ($500,000), motor vehicle taxes ($282,000) and Utilities Franchise Tax ($281,439).

The town is appropriating $551,141 of its fund balance to use as a source of revenue to balance the new budget.

The FY 2025-26 budget becomes effective on July 1.
