AHOSKIE – Brooklynn White has never been one to back down from a challenge.

Despite being one of the smallest players on the court, White possesses the other intangibles to succeed…quickness, determination, hustle, spunk, and assertiveness. And she is taking those traits to the next level.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Hertford County High School standout signed a scholarship to continue her basketball career and education at Guilford Tech.

White said she has been playing basketball since she was 5-years-old.

“I started out at [Ahoskie] Rec, then to [Hertford County] Middle School and then to the high school,” she stated.

She also played softball in middle school and with the Ahoskie Rec leagues, and ran track.

“I even played a little [youth] football,” she laughed.

But all along, basketball was her favorite sport.

“Basketball was more natural for me,” she said. “I like the intensity, and, in basketball, everything is go, go, go and I love that.”

Through her junior year at HCHS, White filled the role of shooting guard.

“This year was my first as the point guard,” she said.

While she likes playing offense, White said she realized the importance of defense.

“I see the floor better on offense and it’s where you are always attacking the basket,” she said. “I’ve worked to improve my defensive game and the mentality of how defense is important, especially in tight games.”

During her four years at HCHS, White has played for head coach Hermea Pugh Jr.

“There’s been some rocky moments, but all in all I’ve learned a lot from coach Pugh, both on the court and off,” White said.

“Brooklynn is an extremely aggressive offensive player,” coach Pugh noted. “She is a coach on the court. A very smart ball player who can get people in position to score.

“The attributes I love the most about Brooklynn’s game is her ability to score at will, especially from the 3-point line as well as her vision,” he added. “A lot of time she can set up teammates to score without them even noticing. This is where I know she will flourish on the next level by being around other players that will be able take advantage of those talents she displays night after night.”

White was a First Team All Conference and All District player at HCHS where she was in the top five in the conference for 3-point shooting percentage and 3-pointers made.

As a full-time starter in her junior and senior seasons, White played in 51 games where she averaged 13.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals, and 2.2 assists per game.

White had offers from Louisburg College and Tidewater Community College, but opted to accept the scholarship from Guilford Tech.

“When I went for a visit, it felt like home,” she said of the Greensboro-based college. “I like the way they treat people. I’ll be working on my game this summer, getting ready to report at Guilford Tech on August 1.”
