Jaquan Tyliek Deloatch, age 33, initially sped off from a traffic stop and was arrested a short time later after trying to flee on foot.
According to Bertie Sheriff’s Investigator Ricky Dozier, he was traveling on Governor’s Road (NC 308) at around 8 a.m. on Friday where he observed a vehicle passing another in a no passing zone before turning onto School Road.
Dozier said he performed a traffic stop on that vehicle in the area of School Road and Republican Road. As Dozier was walking to the stopped vehicle, the driver – now identified as Deloatch – sped off.
A few minutes later, the vehicle reached US 13 in the vicinity of Bertie High School. There, Deloatch continued in an effort to avoid arrest, this time turning into a residential driveway where he exited the vehicle and fled on foot towards a wooded area.
During the chase, Dozier said he heard the sound of gunfire, but none of the shots were in his direction.
Dozier was able to overtake Deloatch and place him under arrest.
Deloatch was charged with felony possession of firearm by felon, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintain a vehicle to sell narcotics, felony flee to elude arrest, passing in no passing zone, and other traffic violations.
He was placed in the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail under a $75,000 bond.
