MURFREESBORO – Two hardworking, local high school seniors were recently awarded scholarship money which will help them pursue higher education after graduation.

The Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce announced the recipients during their annual banquet which was held on April 29. This is the first year for their newly established scholarship.

The two students, Amiya Eure and Landon Burgess, will each receive $1,000.

Eure, who attends Hertford County Early College, is planning to pursue a major in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology. She has career aspirations to become a lawyer and then an Air Force Judge Advocate General.

She is involved in community service ranging from volunteering and leadership roles at her church to tutoring. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, and writing, and she has a strong relationship with Jesus Christ.

“She is seeking scholarship support to relieve financial burdens, allowing her to fully focus on her education, internships, and volunteer opportunities that will prepare her for a future career in law and service to her country,” said Chamber President Sara Crowder during the presentation.

Burgess plans to attend North Carolina State University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education, concentrating in Natural Resources. With a passion for sustainable agriculture and stewardship of natural resources, he plans to inspire future generations through education.

He maintains high GPAs at both Bethel Assembly Christian Academy and Martin Community College while also working part-time with Lassiter Family Farms. He has done volunteer work with the Askewville Food Pantry, Gates County 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Chowan University.

“He seeks scholarship assistance to help alleviate the financial challenges of pursuing higher education while continuing to serve and represent his community,” Crowder said.

The Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce began organizing this new scholarship last year. They held a golf tournament in October 2024 to raise money for the scholarship fund. The winner of that first tournament was a team from Nucor Steel.
