LASKER – With the weather warming up, residents of Lasker can enjoy some fun in the sun thanks to recent additions to the town’s “pocket park.”

The park, which is located next to Town Hall on Church Street, previously consisted of only a small gazebo and a flag pole. But now it has a picnic shelter, a grill, and a paved walking trail as well.

Mayor Dick Collier welcomed people to a ribbon cutting event on Saturday, April 26 to celebrate the additions.

“We have a picnic shelter for the town that we’ll use for town events,” he said. “If you want to use it for your own events, you’re welcome to use it too.”

He did ask residents to notify the Town Hall ahead of time because there are a few rules for the park that people should be aware of.

The park improvements were completed thanks to an allocation from the 2023-2024 state budget. Former NC House representative Michael Wray had presented the money to the town back in 2023, and visited again on Saturday to see the results.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of this,” Wray said in his remarks. “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Wray said Lasker has a dear place in his heart, and when he was serving in the NC General Assembly he wanted to make sure they received funds to help the town. He thanked Mayor Collier, Town Clerk Judy Collier, and the Town Council for what they do for the community.

“You don’t know how much we appreciate what you’ve done,” Collier said to Wray.

The mayor said the remainder of the state funds awarded to Lasker have also been used to add a handicap ramp to Town Hall, new doors for the old Fire Department building, and to demolish the old bank building. Collier added that they will soon have security cameras installed around town as well.

Collier thanked council members Stevie Flythe, Joan Lassiter, and Charles Daughtry for the hard work and support, and Woodman of the World for the new American flag on the flagpole.

“We appreciate everybody’s work,” he said. “The pocket park is coming together.”
