One juvenile formally charged in Woodland shooting

WOODLAND – Formal charges have been filed against one juvenile in connection with a shooting that occurred here Tuesday afternoon.

Captain Patrick Jacobs of the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office said that a 17-year-old male of Woodland has been charged with two counts each of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, injury to personal property, possession of a firearm by a minor, and carrying a concealed weapon.

NCSO Detective Sgt. M. Deloatch and Detective Sgt. W. Killian located the juvenile on Wednesday in the Woodland area. He was placed in a local juvenile detention center under a $50,000 secured bond pending a court date scheduled for May 1.

Deloatch charged the 17-year-old as an adult under the new law that became effective Dec. 1, 2024. This new law pertains to 16 and 17 year olds that commit Class A-E felonies can be charged as an adult and cases begin in adult court.

Jacobs said the investigation is ongoing for other suspects involved and more charges are expected in the coming days.

Deputies responded at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday to a shooting at the Dollar General Store in Woodland. Jacobs told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that shots were fired on the property of Dollar General and within the general area.

A suspect vehicle was immediately developed in the case and with the help of Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and the Murfreesboro Police Department, one of the suspect vehicles was spotted and the occupants detained. At that time, Jacobs said numerous juvenile were under investigation for potential involvement in the shooting.

Jacobs said the Northampton Sheriff’s Office is working on leads and evidence involving this shooting, to include a search for a second suspect vehicle.
