GATESVILLE- Gates County has a new Director for its Board of Elections.

Christy Gaskins took the oath of office here on Friday (April 11) during a brief ceremony held at the Gates County Courthouse. Clerk of Court Monica Horton Wiggins administered the oath.

“I’m thankful for this opportunity and thankful that I was chosen for this position,” Gaskins said.

Gaskins, who has been busy acclimating herself to this new position, said she would provide personal information about her life and professional career at a later date.

Christopher Eason, chairman of the Gates County Board of Elections, said Gaskins brings experience to the Director’s position.

“Christy was working part-time for the Elections Office here in Gates County before being named as our new Director,” Eason said. “She was hired about six months ago, so she has already been through a major election last November. The board has a lot of confidence in her abilities. She has a great personality and shows a willingness to learn more about the job.”

Gaskins replaces longtime Gates County Board of Elections Director Clytia Riddick who resigned last month to accept another job. Riddick’s last day was April 11.

The Gates County Board of Elections office is located at 25 Medical Center Road. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays).

The Elections Office is responsible for conducting all elections held in Gates County. Its principal functions include voter registration, establishing election precincts and voting sites, appointing and training precinct officials, preparing and distributing ballots, maintaining voting equipment, canvassing and certifying the ballots cast in elections, and investigating any voting irregularities.
