Chowan University softball splits pair of doubleheaders

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University gain a split of four games played this past weekend in Conference Carolinas softball action.
On Friday, the Hawks lost game one (5-4 in 8 innings) against Southern Wesleyan before bouncing back to win the second game, 5-1.
In game one, the Hawks collected nine hits in the extra-inning battle.
Kyra Helton led the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 performance, including a triple, while driving in one run and scoring another.
Elizabeth Ingle reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Lenita Bryson also contributed at the plate with a hit and two RBIs.
Alex Bishop started in the circle for the Hawks, with Kendyl Elliott coming on in relief to pitch seven innings, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out four.
In game two, Ava Mizell led the Hawks at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Helton added a pair of hits, as Chowan racked up 10 hits overall and swiped three bases.
Haileigh Boone went the distance in game two to earn the win for the Hawks, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out three.
On Saturday vs. Emmanuel, Chowan suffered a 9-1 setback in game one, but again rebounded to gain a spilt by winning game two by a 4-0 count.
Mizell Bryson, Calliope James, and Mckenzie Misenheimer each tallied a hit in game one, with James also crossing the plate to score a run for the Hawks.
Bishop got the start in game one and was tagged with the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the season. Elliott and Abby Rutledge came on in relief to finish out the game.
Chowan put together a strong offensive showing to secure the win in game two.
The Hawks struck first in the fourth inning as Eryn Ingle doubled to center to bring home Misenheimer, then later scored on a single by Bryson.
Chowan added to their lead in the sixth plating Mizell, followed by an RBI single from James that scored Alivia Denham and moved Bryson into scoring position.
Boone tossed a one-hit shutout, going the full seven innings with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.
The Hawks (17-20 overall and 8-8 in the conference) will hit the road to face Francis Marion on Tuesday, April 8 for a conference doubleheader.
