MURFREESBORO – Abron Joseph Lassiter, affectionately known as “A.J.”, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at his home in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, at the age of 91. Born on February 16, 1934, in Jamesville, North Carolina to Elizabeth “Lizzie” and Herbert Lassiter.

A.J. was no stranger to work. As a young man, he labored in the log woods before spending many years at Harrington Manufacturing in Lewiston-Woodville, NC. Later in life, he found joy as a salesman at ACE Hardware in Ahoskie. Known as an all-around handyman, A.J. could fix almost anything, often lending his skills to maintain rental properties and assist friends and family with repairs.

A.J. had a passion for the outdoors, particularly yard work and taking care of his flowers. He took great pride in mowing grass with his “official” John Deere Commercial Zero Turn mower. He also loved fishing, creating cherished memories with his children on numerous fishing trips. A.J. enjoyed hosting cookouts for family and friends, where laughter and stories were shared over good food. A.J.’s best four-legged friend Princess was often by his side, and he absolutely loved his cats as well. He and his wife attended the Senior Center in Murfreesboro where he made so many friends and fell in love with coloring. His love for travel led him on many tour bus trips, where he delighted in the adventures that awaited on the open road.

A.J. was member of Kelford Baptist Church and his faith was a cornerstone of his life. His legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to family and community will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Corey Lassiter; father, Herbert Carroll Lassiter; his first wife and mother of his children, Faye Lassiter; sister, Betty Jones; and granddaughter, Dawn Owens.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Gloria Vinson Lassiter; daughter, Sandra Emory and husband Tim of Tyner, NC; son, David Lassiter and wife Sheila of Ahoskie, NC; son, Ken Lassiter and wife Greta of Rich Square, NC; and son, Edward Thum and wife Angel of Pinehurst, NC. A.J. was a proud grandfather to Braxton Lassiter and special friend Bridgette, Travis Lassiter and wife Rachel, Chris Emory and wife Brenda, Ryan Emory and wife Renay, Crystal Bazemore and husband Michael, Heather Wrenn and husband Kevin, Madison Dick and husband James, and Brooke Thum and husband Michael. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Claire, Kendall, Blake, Carson, Mikayla, Corey, Jesse, Gracelynn, Addison, and Carter. as well as his cherished fur-baby, Princess.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Megan Branch, Mrs. Inez, and the staff at Gentiva Hospice for their kindness, care, and support during the last several months.

The family will receive friends during a time of visitation on Monday, April 7, 2025, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes – Ahoskie Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the same location. A private family entombment will follow at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel, North Carolina.
