WINTON – Hertford County Public Schools (HCPS) recently had the opportunity to pilot an internship program in partnership with Nucor Steel, providing students with invaluable hands-on experience in the manufacturing industry.

Over the course of six weeks, participating students gained real-world insights into steel production, workplace safety, teamwork and industry-specific skills, all while working alongside experienced professionals at Nucor Steel.

March 20 marked a special milestone as these students successfully graduated from the program, celebrating their hard work, commitment, and newly acquired knowledge. Their enthusiasm and sense of accomplishment were evident as they reflected on this transformative experience.

HCPS officials recognized their counselors whose support and guidance helped ensure that students were prepared and empowered to make the most of this opportunity.

A special thank you goes to Tonya Freeman, HCPS Chief Public Information Officer, for her leadership and commitment to highlighting and sharing the impact of this program. Her efforts in coordinating communications and ensuring that this initiative received the attention it deserves proved invaluable.

A special thank you goes out to Yusef Murphy and Kia Bowser from Nucor. Their support was instrumental and HCPS officials said none of this would have been possible without their help.

“This collaboration has been a shining example of what is possible when educators, industry leaders, and community members come together with a shared vision of student success. Thank you all for your hard work, passion, and dedication in making this project a reality,” said HCPS officials.

Dr. Jesse Pratt, HCPS Superintendent, expressed his appreciation to Nucor Steel for opening its doors to the students and investing in their future.

“This partnership has not only provided students with a meaningful introduction to the steel industry but has also set the foundation for future opportunities in career exploration and workforce development,” Dr. Pratt stated.

HCPS looks forward to continuing this partnership and expanding opportunities for even more students in the future.
