AHOSKIE – Roanoke-Chowan Community hosted a commemorative event on March 18 in honor of Women’s History Month.
This special gathering highlighted the importance of women’s contributions throughout history and recognized four distinguished individuals as the 2025 Women’s History Month & Women’s Empowerment Day Honorees.
The honorees included Meryl Brown, Realtor with Carolina Land and Home Realty, LLC; Pat Byrd, Executive Director & Site Coordinator of R-C Christian Women’s Job Corps; and Jeri Pierce, R-CCC Trustee. Additionally, a surprise award was presented to Dr. Tanya Oliver, R-CCC Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, in recognition of her dedication, resilience, and leadership.
R-CCC President Dr. Murray J. Williams welcomed attendees with an inspiring message.
“This month, we come together to honor the remarkable achievements and contributions of women throughout history and within our own community,” noted Dr. Williams. “These women impact our society in immeasurable ways, and their stories of resilience, courage and innovation inspire us all. At R-CCC, we are committed to fostering an environment where all our students can thrive and achieve their fullest potential. By celebrating the achievements of women, we not only honor their legacy but also empower future generations to continue breaking barriers and making history.”
The keynote address was delivered by R-CCC Board of Trustees member Dr. Mary Ruffin-Harrell, who praised the honorees for their outstanding contributions to the community.
“These remarkable women have used their strength and power to make a difference. This month gives us an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the many contributions that women make every day. There is strength in unity, and power and purpose in our actions,” she stated.
Ruffin-Harrell also reflected on her personal journey and the influences that shaped her. She highlighted the impact of her parents, education, and faith in guiding her success.
“Women have always been empowered, even from the beginning of time. Some may have considered women to be subordinate, but in truth, we have always possessed great strength and purpose. It is up to us to use that power to continue shaping history,” she added.
During her speech, Ruffin-Harrell recognized influential women throughout history including Lucille Ball, Marie Curie, Maya Angelou, and many others, underscoring their significant contributions to society.
Speaking about the honorees, Ruffin-Harrell emphasized their impact on the local community.
“These women are making phenomenal moves in Hertford County,” she said. “From the ballot box to the classrooms, the boardrooms to the schoolhouse, and even the White House, women have always led the charge for progress and change. Our history is filled with women who refused to wait for permission to dream and build. Together, we can continue to make a lasting impact.”
R-CCC Dean of Student Affairs Danielle Ruffin closed the program with a call to action, urging attendees to continue advocating for equality and empowerment.
“Today’s program has highlighted the remarkable achievements of women throughout history, but more importantly, it reminds us that the work is not done. Let us carry forth the lessons we’ve learned today, supporting one another and striving for a future where everyone’s voice is heard, valued and celebrated,” she remarked.
The event was made possible through the collaboration of R-CCC Student Affairs, TRiO Student Support Services, R-CCC Student Life, and the R-CCC Student Government Association.
