Chowan rallies past Kutztown

MURFREESBORO – Chowan combined for six runs in the late innings here Wednesday, rallying past Kutztown University, 9-7, in a non-conference baseball game at Hawkins Field.
The game was tied at 2-2 after four complete innings.
Chowan scored once in the fifth frame to edge in front, 3-2, before the visitors pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
The sixth inning was a big one for Chowan as Ben Bausas hit a double down the left field line, driving in two runs. Joshua James followed with an RBI sacrifice fly, and Josh Tripp reached on a bunt single, scoring another run as the Hawks reclaimed the lead at 7-5.
In the seventh, Bausas singled to right field to drive in a run, and Ethan M. Robinson scored on a passed ball, adding to the Hawks’ lead.
Chowan’s offense kicked off when Elvis Rumaldo hit a solo home run to left center in the first inning, tying the game at 1-1. They took the lead in the second when James hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in a run and making it 2-1.
In the fifth, Rumaldo drove in another run, putting the Hawks ahead 3-2.
Wednesday afternoon saw a parade of pitchers on the mound for the Hawks. Landon Tyndal earned the win in relief, taking over for Jacob Walker in the fifth inning.
Dylan Nickle started the game for Chowan, pitching a solid first inning and allowing just one run. Gabe King followed in the second, with Nick Cataldo taking the mound in the third. Alex Brown pitched the fourth, while Zackary Wilson handled the fifth. Cody Ives, Josh Tripp, and Teray Cherry each pitched an inning to close out the game, contributing to the Hawks’ victory.
The Hawks (4-16 overall) will return to Conference Carolinas action on Friday, March 21 when they face UNC Pembroke at Hawkins Field.
