MURFREESBORO – Joseph Thomas Twine, Sr., beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025 after a courageous battle with dementia. JT or Tootsie, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was born on October 1, 1939 to the late Elton Thomas Twine and Evelyn Sarah Twine in Corapeake, North Carolina.

Joe was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Severn, NC where he served on the Deacon Board, the Pastor’s Aid Committee, and the Senior Enhancement Program. He was involved in the Women in Prayer Outreach Ministry and sang in the male choir for First Baptist Church in Severn.

Joe was known for his gentle nature, humility, and unwavering kindness towards others. Joe loved his family, friends, and community. Gathering with family and friends were a source of immense joy for him, as he treasured the moments spent laughing, enjoying outdoor activities and making unforgettable memories.

In 1968 Joe started his remarkable journey in law enforcement, a career that would extend over five decades. He began his service as a Patrolman with the Murfreesboro Police Department, dedicated five years to this role before advancing to sergeant after an impressive three years of dedicated service. In 1973, he joined the Hertford County Deputy Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff.

In 1977, Joe was appointed as Hertford County’s first Juvenile Investigator, and in 1993 he was elected vice president of the Juvenile Association of North Carolina. He retired from the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office as a Lieutenant in 1994. Always eager to expand his horizon and make a difference, Joe came out of retirement to become the Resource Officer at Hertford County High School, where he made a significant impact on the youth. He later worked security at Roanoke-Chowan Community College.

Joe was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to the Historic Murfreesboro Commission as a member at-large in recognition of his over 40 years of service in law enforcement in Hertford County, where he started as the first African American Police Officer in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

Joe was married to the late Mrs. Georgia Twine.

In addition to his parents, Elton Thomas Twine and Evelyn Sarah Twine, Joe was also preceded in death by his brother, Chester Twine.

Joe leaves to continue his spirit in life, his children: Joseph (Corlissa) Twine, Jr., Ricky Twine, Kevin (Monica) Twine, Reginald Twine, Terrence (Janice) Twine, Brent (Brittany) Harmon, Lamont (Tonya) Harmon, and Taneka (Manny) Mateo; sister, Frances Thompson; twenty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews; a special partner, Lillie Owens White; sister-in-law, Thelma Everette; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at First Baptist Severn.
