Spring sports season underway at Lawrence Academy

MERRY HILL- The spring sports season is underway across the Roanoke-Chowan area as all local schools have moved on from basketball.

On Tuesday, March 11, the Lawrence Academy campus overflowed with vehicles as all three athletic fields were populated with fans cheering on their respective teams.

In baseball action, the Warriors lost to Cape Fear Christian Academy, 9-8, in non-conference action.

Lawrence trailed 6-0 in the early innings but managed to comeback later in the game. The Warriors were up 7-6 in the top of the 7th inning until Cape Fear but together a rally to take the lead. The Warriors could not recover in the bottom of the seventh.

Lawrence’s Nike Wiggins threw from the hill in the early innings. He also had a double in the game.

Patrick Lundy smacked a home run that drove in two runs and Ayden Foster was able to tally two hits in the game

The Warriors had a total of seven stolen bases, with Wiggins and Haiden Little with each having two.

In softball action, Lawrence suffered a 3-1 non-conference loss against Cape Fear Christian Academy. It was a very low scoring game where hits were far and few between for the Warriors.

Cape Fear jumped to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

The Warriors only score came from a solo homerun by Caroline Halstead. Lawrence had only three hits in the game: the homerun by Halstead, a double by Clair Ferebee, and a triple by Claire Smith.

In soccer action on Tuesday, Lawrence celebrated a 5-0 win over conference rival Albemarle School. The Warriors offense just overpowered the Colts defense as Shelby Brabble scored all five of Lawrence’s goals.

Ava Manheim aided in the victory with two assists, along with one assist each from Lilli Williams and Eloise Haigler.

The Warriors impeccable defensive unit kept the Colts at bay and scoreless. Goal-keeper Emily May’s defensive effort led to four saves.
