COFIELD – Thomas Franklin Phelps, passed peacefully on March 9, 2025, in Hertford County, North Carolina, at the age of 97. Born on October 21, 1927, Thomas lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his work, and his faith. A devoted member of Harrellsville Baptist Church, Thomas served as a deacon and was ever ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. His faith was central to his life, guiding his actions and shaping his character.
Thomas was a dedicated electrician, serving diligently at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard until his retirement after 25 years of exemplary service. His commitment to his craft was matched only by his love for his family and the joy he found in their company. Thomas cherished his role as a family man above all else. He loved his children deeply, delighting in taking them fishing and on trips from the beach to the mountains. His grandchildren brought him immense joy, whether he was playing with them or giving them rides on the golf cart or tractor. His laughter, warmth, and presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Gussie Pierce Phelps and Norman Franklin Phelps, his son-in-law, Royce Overton, as well as his siblings Clarence Phelps, Beulah Holloman, Dot Evans, Harvey Phelps, and Jay Phelps, Thomas leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Frances Taylor Phelps. His memory will be cherished by his children, Angela Overton of Sykesville, MD, and Larry Phelps and wife Carolyn of Suffolk, VA; his grandchildren Sherry Brown and husband Joseph of Sykesville, MD, Neil Phelps and wife Jessica of Radford, VA, and Ashley Walden and husband Matt of Eure, NC; and his great-grandchildren, Sydney Brown, Bradley Brown, Blake Walden, and Grant Walden. He is also survived by his sister, Lorene Brookshire and husband Warren of Summerville, SC, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Harrellsville Baptist Church in Harrellsville, NC, with Dr. Jeff Crabtree officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.
