Chamblee said as Nelson’s vehicle reached the bridge, the car went left of center, striking a 2019 GMC truck head-on. That truck, traveling south, was driven by Edwin Rose, 52, of Murfreesboro.

Nelson died at the scene, according to Chamblee. Rose, who was transported by ambulance to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, was not seriously injured.

The fatality was the fifth of the year in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District 2 area (Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties). Two of those deaths have occurred in Hertford County.
