Hawks gain softball split thanks to Ingle’s walk-off homer

MURFREESBORO – It’s a moment every player dreams of.
Elizabeth Ingle stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 5-5 deadlock and ended it on one swing of her bat, slapping the game-winning homerun over the leftfield fence as Chowan gained a split against Georgian Court in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
In game two, the Hawks’ offense came alive in the second inning when Lenita Bryson launched a homer to leftfield. In the fourth, Kyndal Hopkins drove in a run with a sac fly, followed by Alex Bishop’s single through the left side, which plated another run.
Ava Mizell scored in the sixth on a wild pitch, and Hopkins added another run with a bunt single.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Ingle blasted a walk-off homer to secure a win for Chowan.
Alex Bishop started in the circle for Chowan in game two, pitching four innings and allowing seven hits, three runs, while striking out two batters. Abby Rutledge came in relief, earning the win for the Hawks as she surrendered just one hit and two runs over two innings of work.
Game one featured a pitching duel between the Hawks and the Lions, which ended with the visitors posting a 2-1 win.
Chowan’s lone run came in the fourth inning when Lenita Bryson connected for a single to right center, allowing Kaitlyn Springle to cross the plate.
Haileigh Boone started in game one, pitching five innings and allowing just five hits, one run, while striking out two batters. Rutledge relieved Boone, tossing two innings, giving up one hit and one run, while striking out five batters.
The Hawks (9-12 overall) will return to action on Friday, March 14 when they host Mount Olive for their Conference Carolinas opener. The first game of the doubleheader is set to begin 2 p.m.
