HARRELLSVILLE – Marcus Wiley “Mark” Johnson, Jr., age 71, passed away on Sunday, March 02, 2025 at Ahoskie Health and Rehab in Ahoskie, NC. Mark was born on September 28, 1953 in Nash County, NC a son to Marcus Wiley Johnson, Sr. and Nannie Alford Johnson. Mark lived a life full of adventure with many sides to his life.

Mark was an industrial electrician by trade, spending many years working with Ray Electric in Alaska. Beyond his career, Mark was a man of many interests and pursuits. In 1976, he embarked on a remarkable journey, walking through all 50 states as part of his bicentennial walk. This endeavor earned him a place in the Guinness World Records and was driven by his belief in the inherent goodness of people. Throughout his travels, he found shelter and sustenance from strangers, proving to himself and others that kindness knows no bounds. He often spoke of repeating this journey, fueled by his love for walking. Mark’s adventurous spirit also led him to attempt hiking the Appalachian Trail. Although his journey was cut short after three weeks and nine miles. He was quite a character, always up to something.

He was a member of Harrellsville Baptist Church and was known for his deep bass voice that resonated through the choir. He formerly served as a deacon and was a Royal Ambassador (RA) leader. Mark’s life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures, the thrill of adventure.

Along with his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Johnson.

Mark is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lillian Anne Holloman Johnson and her children; Walter Hunnicutt (Gina) of Clover, SC, Jerry Hunnicutt (Lisa) of Harrellsville, and Mark Daniel Hunnicut (Kristina) of Winterville; siblings, Paul Johnson (Linda) of Grimesland, Steve Johnson (Vanessa) of Simpson, Beth Johnson Stroud (Randy) of Ahoskie, and Paige Pierce of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Chris Hunnicutt (Sarah) of Harrellsville, Joshua Hunnicutt (Sarah) of Charlotte, Stephanie Hunnicut of Clover, SC, Libby Grimes (Thomas) of Harrellsville, Emily Grace Kerr (James) of Summerton, SC, Megan Perreault (Chris) of Harrellsville, and Walter Glen Hunnicutt of Clover, SC; five great grandchildren, Nienka, Natalie, Aileigh Grace, Reese, Raleigh John, and a special gift, Eli Johnson; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 1-2 p.m. at Harrellsville Baptist Church, Harrellsville, NC. A celebration of life service will begin at 2 p.m., with Dr. Jeff Crabtree officiating. Burial will follow at Harrellsville Cemetery in Harrellsville, NC.
