AHOSKIE – Eleven years have passed since tragedy struck what is typically a peaceful neighborhood in Ahoskie.
In the early morning hours of March 2, 2014, a person entered the Parker Avenue home of Ruby Baker where they shot and killed the 85-year-old woman.
Baker was known far and wide as a loving, caring woman who would help those in need. She had lived at that residence since 1954, raising a family that eventually grew to a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her husband, William, passed away in 2007.
Despite the efforts of the Ahoskie Police and the State Bureau of Investigation, no one has yet been arrested.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Baker family. We realize, due to passage of time, this is considered a cold case, but we have not or will not rest until the person responsible is brought to justice,” said Ahoskie Police Chief Michele Garrett on Monday of this week.
“We remain actively engaged in the investigation of Mrs. Baker’s murder,” stated Stephen White, Deputy Chief of the Ahoskie Police. “As new DNA testing technology becomes available, we are using those resources to aid in our continuing investigation as we work to bring closure to this case and closure to the Baker family.”
White added that the Ahoskie Police still encourage the public to offer any information they may have on this case.
“Even the smallest detail can have a big impact on this case,” he said.
Those with information can share it by calling the Ahoskie Police Department at 252-332-5011.
