Bertie, Northampton boys; HCHS girls advance in state playoffs

Three teams from the Roanoke-Chowan area join the Gates County girls in advancing to the second round of the 2025 North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state basketball playoffs.

The varsity boys teams from Bertie High School and Northampton County High School collected wins in Tuesday night’s opening round. The Hertford County varsity girls were also a winner in Tuesday’s first round action.

At home, Bertie, seeded #14 in the Eastern Class 1A bracket, raced past #19 Roxboro Community School, 75-54.

Bertie (14-11 overall) will travel to #3 Lakewood (22-1 overall) for a second round game on Friday.

In Gaston, Northampton, seeded #6 in the Eastern 1A bracket, routed #27 Neuse Charter School, 83-51. The Jaguars led 40-23 at halftime.

Jiyoun Williams led Northampton with 18 points. Torrey Harris chipped in 13 points and Gmarcus Faison and Rashaud Walker each added nine points.

Northampton (19-6 overall) will host #11 Tarboro (14-6 overall) in Friday’s second round.

Hertford County’s varsity girls, seeded #23 in the Eastern 2A bracket, advanced to the second round by edging North Carolina School of Science and Math, 34-29, in Durham on Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (12-13 overall) will travel to seventh seeded Martin County (15-9 overall) on Friday for a second round matchup.

Hertford County’s varsity boys, seeded #25, saw their season come to an end on Tuesday as the Bears were defeated at #8 Eastern Wayne, 93-55, in the opening round of the Class 2A state playoffs. HCHS finished with a 9-15 overall record.

Gates County’s boys, seeded #26 in the Eastern Class 1A bracket, lost their state playoff opener on the road on Tuesday night, suffering an 88-62 setback vs. #7 Chatham Central.
