With the exception of possible snow flurries this morning (Thursday), the worst of the winter storm that hit the Roanoke-Chowan area on Wednesday is over.

But in its wake, the storm has left all roads in the region extremely dangerous for travel.

Emergency response officials in all four local counties are echoing the same comment: “Roads are not safe for travel. Please stay at home if all possible.”

First responders are still answering calls for service, but said to expect extended response times due to the snow covered roads.

NC DOT trucks were seen out this morning to begin the task of removing the snow.

Today’s weather calls for mostly cloudy skies with a chance for snow flurries until early afternoon. The high temperature is expected to reach 32 degrees.

There is a Cold Weather Advisory in place from 10 pm tonight until 10 am Friday. Tonight’s low is forecasted at 13 degrees with a wind chill of 5 degrees. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. If you go outside, wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

The skies will clear and the temperature will rise on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That forecast calls for sunny skies with high temperatures of 39, 42, and 50 degrees respectively. Friday’s low will be in the mid-teens. Expect low temperatures of 23 and 27 degrees on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
