The theme, “A Dream Renewed: Carrying the Torch Forward,” encapsulated the chapter’s commitment to honoring Dr. King’s vision of justice, hope, and service.

Wendy Vann, Mistress of Ceremonies, seamlessly guided the audience through an evening of reflection and celebration. Those in attendance were reminded of the collective responsibility to uphold Dr. King’s ideals and actively work toward a brighter future.

Adding to the uplifting atmosphere were the musical offerings by The Ruffin Singers, under the direction of Johnny Ruffin, whose songs resonated deeply with the theme of the evening. Their renditions served as a reminder of the enduring power of music to inspire hope and unity. The audience was visibly moved, swaying and clapping along to the melodies that echoed Dr. King’s message of love and perseverance.

The highlight of the service was the message of celebration delivered by the Rev. Dr. James E. Jones Jr., pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Lewiston and Greater Grace Church in Portsmouth, VA. His sermon, “When Hope Sings in the Darkness,” captivated the audience. Dr. Jones took the audience on a flight highlighting three points: Recognize the promise in your pain where he emphasized how Dr. King embodied the anchor of hope when he dared to declare, “I Have a Dream” knowing the realization of his dream might come long after his death. The second point was, realize the song in the silence meaning that hope finds its voice in prayer. Prayer is the sacred space where Heaven meets Earth. Prayer is the place where God whispers, “I have not left you”. Dr. Jones’ final point was, remember the light above the horizon; this is where hope demands action. He referenced one of Dr. King’s famous quotes, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” When the way forward seems unclear, hope reminds us to take one step at a time. These points echoed the resilience that Dr. King embodied throughout his life.

Another highlight of the tribute to Dr. King included the chapter honoring the school superintendents from Bertie, Hertford, Gates, and Northampton counties with the prestigious MLK Drum Major for Service Award. This is an honor bestowed upon individuals who exemplify Dr. King’s spirit of leadership and service.

The recipients were Dr. Otis Smallwood, superintendent of Bertie County Schools, Dr. Jesse Pratt, superintendent of Hertford County Schools, Dr. Phillip Barry Williams, superintendent of Gates County Schools, and Dr. Rosa Atkins, interim superintendent of Northampton County Schools. Their dedication to education and service reflects the very essence of Dr. King’s legacy. The sorority commended these leaders for their tireless efforts to uplift and serve their communities.
