JACKSON – The Northampton County Health Department received confirmation that there have been two influenza-related deaths reported in the county.
Megan Vick, Director of the Northampton County Health Department, said both of the individuals were over the age of 65 with underlying conditions.
“Historically, flu activity peaks in North Carolina around late January or February; however, influenza activity has been widespread in North Carolina since December,” Vick said. “In Northampton County we have seen a significant increase in all respiratory viruses, including influenza in
citizens of all ages.”
Influenza is a serious disease caused by a virus. Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, shaking, chills, body aches, and extreme weakness.
Flu is very contagious and is spread by an infected person’s respiratory droplets that are released in the air through coughing, sneezing, talking, or laughing.
Flu vaccine is the safest and most effective way to protect against flu and is recommended for anyone over 6 months of age. It is particularly important for people at high
risk of complications, including pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, young children and the elderly. Your vaccination also protects people around you that are unable to be vaccinated including young babies.
In addition to being vaccinated, take everyday preventive measures. These include washing your hands, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and staying home from work or keeping your children home from school when sick to reduce the spread of germs.
