MURFREESBORO – Chowan University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams this past weekend where the Hawks swept Lees-McRae and Converse University in Conference Carolinas action.

On Friday, both Chowan teams made the trek to the North Carolina mountains where the Hawks defeated Lees-McRae in both games.

In the women’s game, Chowan trailed 20-14 at the end of the first quarter but outscored their hosts 48-20 over the next two periods en route to an 85-66 win.

Yasmine Brown led Chowan with 23 points, three steals, and seven rebounds. Daneesha Briggs contributed 14 points and four steals in the win. Meara Carter notched another double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds and scoring 10 points.

The Hawks dominated in the paint with 42 points, capitalized on 21 points off turnovers, and scored 14 second-chance points.

In the men’s game, Chowan raced out to a 47-28 halftime lead and went on to capture an 82-68 victory.

That win avenged a three-point loss (93-90) at home vs. Lees-McRae back on Jan. 21.

In this past Friday’s game, Eric Gordon Jr. led the Hawks with 15 points and also contributed two steals. Daylan Askew and Damerius Summers each added 13 points. Cheick Traore was a force on the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds to help secure the win.

The Hawks dominated with 38 points in the paint, 16 second-chance points, and 18 points off turnovers. CU’s bench added 32 points.

On Sunday at home, Chowan continued its winning ways with a sweep of Converse.

Chowan’s women again started slow, trailing 18-9 art the end of the first quarter, but used a 23-12 run in the second period to get back in the game. The Hawks would go on to lead by as many as 11 points in the third quarter en route to a 68-58 victory.

Brown led the way with 13 points and added four steals. Nyeisha Savage and Alexandria James-Fearon each scored 11 points. Carter pulled down 10 rebounds while contributing 8 points.

Chowan’s women improved to 17-3 overall and 14-3 in the conference.

In Sunday’s men’s game, Chowan led 42-30 at halftime and kept their offense in high gear the rest of the way, defeating their guests, 95-66.

Chowan improved to 15-8 overall and 12-5 in the league.

Askew led the Hawks with 30 points and three blocks, while Aaron Ross contributed 15 points and two steals. Israel Powell posted a career-high 13 points to help secure the victory for the Hawks.

Chowan dominated with 30 points in the paint and secured 19 second-chance points. The bench contributed heavily, adding 37 points. CU capitalized on turnovers, scoring 15 points off Converse miscues.

Both teams will be back in action at home on Saturday, Feb. 22 (2 pm and 4 pm) against Southern Wesleyan in a celebration of Division II Day and Senior Day for Chowan basketball.
