Chowan women rise in rankings

MURFREESBORO – After holding the No. 8 spot for the past two weeks, Chowan University’s women’s basketball team climbed to No. 7 in the D2CSC Women’s Basketball Poll for Week 12.
Chowan boasts a 15-2 overall record and sits at 12-2 in Conference Carolinas.
Chowan is setting the defensive standard in NCAA Division II, leading the nation in multiple categories. The Hawks top the rankings in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 30.6% shooting. They dominate the boards with a nation-best +17.0 rebound margin, averaging 45.9 rebounds per game while limiting opponents to just 28.9. Additionally, Chowan boasts the top scoring defense, allowing only 46.4 points per game.
Chowan also excels in other areas, ranking 3rd in the nation for offensive rebounds with 328 total and an average of 19.3 per game, 4th in total rebounds with 781 and an average of 45.9 per game, and 6th in three-point percentage defense, holding opponents to just 23.1% shooting from beyond the arc. The Hawks are also ranked 14th in win percentage, boasting an impressive 88.2% mark.
Individually, Nyeisha Savage has earned a spot on the NCAA DII statistics leaderboard, ranking 16th in offensive rebounds with 59 total (4.2 per game). The sophomore also sits at 33rd in blocks per game, recording 24 total and averaging 1.71 per contest.
Yasmine Brown leads the Hawks offensively, averaging 12.6 points per game while also setting the defensive tone with a team-high 40 steals. Savage dominates the glass, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game, with Meara Carter close behind at 8.1 boards per game.
