Chowan women win battle of division leaders

MURFREESBORO – In a matchup between division leaders here Saturday, Chowan’s defense stifled Shorter University in a 57-49 win by the home-standing Hawks.

Coming into the game, Shorter sat at the top of the South Division, while Chowan led the East Division. Both teams entered the game with identical 11-2 records in Conference Carolinas action.

Meara Carter recorded another double-double this season, collecting 15 rebounds and scoring 10 points. She also blocked two shots.

Yasmine Brown led Chowan’s offense with 17 points and also contributed defensively, recording three steals. Nyeisha Savage added eight rebounds and nine points for the Chowan victory.

Chowan’s defense turned in another big effort, limiting their guests to just 13 made baskets (13-of-51; 25.5%) and 2-of-15 (13.3%) from three-point range.

Offensively, Chowan dominated in the paint, scoring 34 points, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 23 points. They also put up 16 points off turnovers, while their bench added a solid 19 points.

Throughout the game, the Hawks maintained control, holding the lead for nearly the entire contest, with only one lead change.

Chowan (15-2 overall; 12-2 in the conference) will play at UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
