High school hoops weekly wrap-up

Hertford County’s varsity boys snapped a three-game losing streak at home on Wednesday night where the Bears edged past Currituck County, 75-72.

Shimere Garris had a double-double for the Bears, scoring 38 points and hauling down 14 rebounds. Josiah Powell also had a big game for HCHS, scoring 20 points.

The Bears improved to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in the conference with the win.

The Lady Bears dropped two close games this week, losing to First Flight, 55-49, on Tuesday and 39-35 vs. Currituck County on Wednesday. Brooklynn White led HCHS with 22 points vs. First Flight. Karae Alfred’s 11 points topped the Lady Bears scorebook vs. Currituck.

The Lady Bears are now 7-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

Gates County’s girls suffered their first loss of the season on Monday at Perquimans, falling 56-42, but the Lady Barons bounced back one night later at home where they defeated Martin County, 66-43.

Individual stats were not available for either game.

Gates County’s girls are now 19-1 overall and lead the Four Rivers Conference with a 9-1 record.

Bertie High School’s varsity boys collected back-to-back conference wins this week: defeating Tarboro, 70-55, and North East Carolina Prep, 72-49.

Individual stats were not available for either game.

Bertie improved to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the Four Rivers Conference with the two wins.

Bertie’s varsity girls gained a split of the same two games this week: losing 34-30 vs. Tarboro before bouncing back to beat North East Carolina Prep, 49-10.

There were no individual stats available from either game.

The Lady Falcons now stand at 4-14 overall and 1-6 in conference action.
