Family altercation leads to deadly shooting

MURFREESBORO – An alleged altercation between family members led to a man killing his brother near here early Sunday morning.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes said that Jahiem Taylor, age 20, is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of his 25-year-old brother, Keondre Taylor.

J. Taylor is being held without bond pending his first court appearance.

Hayes said Hertford County Communications Center received a call at 3:19 a.m. Sunday regarding a shooting at 121 Pine Street, located off Pine Tops Road outside of Murfreesboro.

Upon arriving at the scene, Hayes said deputies located a gunshot victim lying on the floor of the residence. Hertford County EMS responded to the scene and the victim was transported to ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Hayes shared that after his deputies started their investigation they learned the victim was in an altercation with J. Taylor.

“At some time during the altercation, Jahiem produced a handgun and fired at Keondre, striking Keondre in the groin area,” Hayes said in a press release. “Jahiem left the residence but was later located in the area by law enforcement.”

Hayes added that the brothers both resided at 121 Pine Street.

Despite the arrest, Hayes said this remains an active investigation and if anyone has any information to call the Sheriff’s Office at 252-358-7800. Callers can remain anonymous.

Sheriff Hayes said there are no other suspects sought in this murder, but the investigation remains open due to collecting evidence.
