AHOSKIE – Jennifer Byrd, leader of Girl Scout Junior Troop 2702 in Ahoskie, was recognized for her volunteer service by Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast with her 25 year adult volunteer pin.

A volunteer recognition event was held on April 22 at A Place for Girls, the council’s headquarters and regional program center.

Byrd was a Girl Scout for 12 years, earning the top three awards for Girl Scouts, the Bronze, Silver and Gold. After high school graduation, in 1997, she continued working with younger Girl Scouts. She has currently been leading the troop, that includes her daughter Sophia, for the last five years.

Sophia reached the 1,000 boxes sold during the 2023 cookie season, which made her the top seller for her troop. The troop also recently planted flowers in front of the cancer treatment center at the area hospital. The garden was one planted many years ago by a troop led by Sophia’s grandmother, Kay Byrd, who is a lifetime Girl Scout.
