WINDSOR – One person is dead and another was wounded in what police here described as a “drive-by” shooting last night (Saturday).

Richard Callander, 40, was shot and killed as he stood among a group of people in front of a residence at 601 Ghent Street, according to Windsor Police Chief Justin Jackson.

Jackson added that Derrick Vaughan (age unknown) was also struck as several shots were fired in the incident. Vaughan’s injuries, he said, are not thought to be life-threatening.

“We are unsure at this time if either of two men that were shot we the intended targets of the shooter,” Jackson told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.

Jackson said the shooting occurred at around 9:30 p.m.

“We are continuing our investigation. No arrests have been made and there is no suspect information to share at this time,” he added.

The North Carolina SBI is assisting the Windsor Police with the investigation.
