Hawks surge past Bobcats in league opener

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan men’s lacrosse team used a strong second half to grab a 16-10 victory in Conference Carolinas action against Lees-McRae here Wednesday afternoon.

Jaxon Martin led the Hawks with seven points, recording four goals and three assists. Martin collected his 150th career goal.

Erik Dozzi posted four goals and one assist. Carson Moore posted his first career-multi goal contest with two goals and three assists.

Noah Jalal and Rylan Downey notched two goals each. Eric George added one goal and two assists. Michael Litchfield tallied his first collegiate goal. Julian Wolfe grabbed one assist, while Harrison Buckman posted a pair of assists.

Gavin Koors picked up the win in cage with 15 saves.

Martin, off an assist from Geoege, put the Hawks on the board midway through the opening frame. Moore then found Jalal for a goal before Lees-McRae took a 3-2 lead. Litchfield scored in transition to even the score at 3-all.

LMC opened the second quarter with a pair of goals before back-to-back tallies by Dozzi evened the contest. Jalal scored unassisted as both teams went into the intermission knotted up at 6-all.

Downey scored a man-up goal from Martin before Martin tallied a man-down goal to lead 8-6. The Bobcats rallied with their only goals of the stanza to even the score at 8-all.

The Hawks would score three straight goals to end the period as George scored off an assist by Moore. Wolfe found Dozzi for a goal and Moore found the back of the net with four seconds remaining off an assist by Martin to lead 11-8.

Moore scored to open the fourth period off an assist by Dozzi. The Bobcats scored on the man-advantage before the Hawks countered with a man-up goal by Martin off the assist by Buckman.

George found Dozzi for a goal before the Bobcats’ final tally.

Downey scored from distance off the assist from Buckman before Martin finished off the scoring with an assist from Moore.

Chowan (3-6 overall; 1-0 in league play) hits the road to take on North Greenville on Saturday, March 25. Opening face-off is for 12 noon.
