Hawks rout King, advance in conference tourney

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball made an emphatic statement in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Championship here Monday with a 94-73 victory over ninth-seeded King University.

Five Hawks posted double-figures led by Destiny Robinson with another double-double notching 21 points and 13 rebounds. Aniah Patterson added 15 points, while Meara Carter tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Demetria Bland added 12 points and Imani Hickman collected 11 points.

Chowan led by 34 points at one point in the contest and led 53-34 at the half.

Tied at 13-13 in the early going, Keibra Hopkins and Tyaysia Sharpe each sank a basket before Carter ended the frame with a three-point play to lead 21-15.

Chowan would take advantage of the mismatch in the post on their way to 32 points in the second quarter. Robinson and Carter went to work with a basket each. Yasmine Brown added a jumper before Robinson pushed the lead to 32-21.

Bland added a pair from the stripe along with a basket by Kashara Simpson and Carter. Robinson picked up a pair at the line along with a layup and a jumper by Aniah Patterson pushed the lead to 44-30.

Hickman collected a pair of baskets. A layup by Robinson and a triple by Patterson ended the half with a 53-34 advantage.

Chowan opened the second half on a 16-2 run to push the advantage to 69-36.

Chowan (17-10 overall) earns a spot in the Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals for the second straight season. They will play Emmanuel at 11 am on Friday, March 3 in Spartanburg, SC.
