AHOSKIE – A Kelford man was shot here Saturday night as he sat behind the wheel of a vehicle parked in Newmarket Shopping Center and later died at the local hospital.

Ahoskie Police Chief Jimmy Asbell identified the victim as 21-year-old Kyun Taylor.

Asbell said his officers were notified at around 8:40 pm in reference to shots being fired in the parking lot in front of Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant.

“Upon the arrival of the officers, they found a male slumped over in the driver’s seat of a vehicle,” Asbell said. “That individual was transported by Hertford County EMS to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where he died a short time later. We extend our condolences to the victim’s family.”

Asbell added that his investigators, along with those from the North Carolina SBI, are in the early stages of collecting evidence.

“We were at the scene most of last night and will return this morning (Sunday),” he said. “We are hopeful that someone, either entering or exiting the restaurant or were in the shopping center’s parking lot, saw something suspicious. If they did, we’re asking them to share that information with us.”

Along with the SBI agents, Asbell thanked the Ahoskie Fire Department, the Hertford County’s Sheriff’s Office, and Hertford County EMS for their assistance at the crime scene.
