WINDSOR – Members of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor with this year’s theme “While We Breathe, We Hope.”

Rev. Dr. David E. Moore, Jr., Pastor of Indian Woods, was the keynote speaker for the evening, with Johnny Ruffin, Jr. serving as musician. Evangelist Kizmet Outlaw served as the Worship Leader.

Because Dr. King often referred to himself as a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness, the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter recognizes area citizens as drum majors for their services in the Roanoke Chowan area. This year the chapter recognized and honored four Teachers of the Year from the area as the 2023 drum major award recipients. The honorees were Graylen Boone of Gates County, Ashita Harris of Northampton County, Alicia Myrick-Fennell of Hertford County, and April Yates Swain of Bertie County.

The Divine Nine (Greek fraternities and sororities) were represented in large numbers as they assisted with the offering and served as ushers.

The tribute to Dr. King was very well attended with several citizens of the area participating on the program. They included Rev. Paul Moore, Rev. Darryl Edwards, Rocquina Vaughan, and Serisa Moore.

Members of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter that were on program were Judy Swain, Reba Carlton, Loretta McCullough, Viola Vaughan-Holland, Rev. Dr. Mary Ruffin Harrell, and Charlene Jones.

At the conclusion of the program Linda S. Peele, President of the Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter, gave her words of appreciation and thanked everyone for supporting the event.

The program ended with everyone singing “We Shall Overcome” with the Benediction given by Rev. David E. Moore, Jr.
