Chowan women soar past Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK – The Chowan women’s basketball team placed four players in double-figures as the Hawks routed Lees-McRae, 80-42, in Conference Carolinas action here Saturday afternoon.

Aniah Patterson led the Hawks with 16 points. Meara Carter posted a career-high 12 points. Destiny Robinson and Jayah King-Johnson chipped in with 11 points each.

Chowan forced 29 turnovers while limiting their own to only 10 turnovers. The Hawks scored 29 points off turnovers and went 21-of-28 from the charity stripe.

Holding a narrow 14-11 lead in the first quarter, Chowan began to pull away as Keibra Hopkins nailed a pull-up jumper and a pair from the stripe. Imani Hickman and Sydney Roberts then added two free throws each as Chowan led 22-15 by the end of the opening period.

That margin grew to 31-15 in the early stages of the second quarter highlighted by Robinson’s bucket and two free throws and a three-point play by Hickman.

Chowan led 38-22 at the half.

Patterson started off the second half the same way she started the game with a three-pointer. Patterson would go on to score a pair of transition layups to stretch the lead to 46-22.

King-Johnson notched a pair from the stripe before Demetria Bland used a transition layup after a steal.

After the media timeout, King-Johnson posted a putback basket and Hickman added a free throw. King-Johnson added a layup to push the lead to 57-25. Carter notched a layup before the end of the quarter that aid Chowan in building a 59-28 lead.

Chowan (11-6 overall; 7-4 in league play) has a short turnaround as the Hawks travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville on Monday, January 23. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
