Third quarter surge sparks Chowan women

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team overcame a sluggish first half to blow past Southern Wesleyan, 67-56, in Conference Carolinas action here Saturday afternoon.

Destiny Robinson registered her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Aniah Patterson added 13 points and four steals. Keibra Hopkins and Imani Hickman collected eight points each.

Chowan led 31-29 at the intermission and outscored the Warriors 23-9 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

Trailing 16-15 at the end of the opening period, Jayah King-Johnson hit a jumper to start the second quarter to hand the lead to Chowan. However, the visitors answered with a 10-2 run to lead 26-19.

Chowan countered with a 12-3 run to end the half. Yasmine Brown started the run with a fastbreak layup followed by a pair of free throws by Demetria Bland. After the basket by SWU, Hopkins picked up three points and Brown hit a layup to even the score at 29-all.

Hopkins hit a putback layup to end the opening half to lead 31-29 at intermission.

Chowan stormed out of the locker room and went on a 17-0 run to open the third quarter, building a 48-29 lead. Tyaysia Sharpe started the run with a jumper followed by a pair of freebies by Hopkins and a basket by Robinson. Following a SWU timeout, Patterson hit a jumper in transition and completed a three-point play. Robinson added a pair of layups before Hickman concluded the run with a layup.

Meara Carter and Sydney Roberts continued with a basket each before SWU closed the gap with a 7-2 run to end the quarter with Chowan still in front at 54-38.

SWU opened the fourth period with another 7-2 run. Chowan got back on their offensive game as Patterson nailed a jumper followed by free throws from Hickman and Robinson. Hickman collected two more baskets to finish off the contest.

Chowan improved to 10-5 overall (6-3 in league play) in advance of its Monday trip to Belmont Abbey.
