Chowan women continue home winning streak

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team continued their home winning streak with a 68-41 rout of Converse in Conference Carolinas action here Saturday afternoon.

Imani Hickman collected her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jayah King-Johnson added nine points off the bench. Destiny Robinson had six points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two blocks.

Aniah Patterson added five points, five steals, and five rebounds.

Chowan’s defense forced 37 turnovers leading to 20 steals while holding the Valkyries to 29.4% shooting from the floor.

Leading 7-5 in the early stages of the game, Chowan closed the first quarter with a 15-3 offensive spurt to take control.

Sydney Roberts started the run with three freebies followed by a jumper in transition after a Demetria Bland steal. Hickman added a three-point play before Converse slowed the run with a three-pointer. Bland answered with a triple as Roberts and Meara Carter scored to extend the lead to 22-8. Converse would end the run before the quarter with a jumper, 22-10.

Chowan led 28-12 as Keibra Hopkins, King-Johnson and Bland connected from the floor to open the second quarter.

The Valkyries would not connect from the floor for the final 8:24 of the quarter until the buzzer. Converse picked up five points at the charity stripe.

Kashara Simpson and Carter connected from the floor to keep the score moving before King-Johnson added a three-point play. Hickman hit a jumper for the final points of the frame for the Hawks until the basket by Converse, but Chowan led 39-20 at the intermission.

That 19-point lead (50-31) was still present at the end of the third period.

The Hawks sealed the victory with a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter where Patterson and Bland each connected from three-point range while Tyaysia Sharpe and Robinson both added a two-point basket.

Chowan (9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play) looks to continue their home winning streak as the Hawks host UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
