AHOSKIE – An altercation at Ahoskie Commons Shopping Center on Dec. 30 led to one juvenile being shot.

Ahoskie Police Chief Jimmy Asbell said the juvenile was not seriously injured.

“That individual was treated and released from the local hospital,” Asbell stated.

He said APD officers were dispatched to a “shots fired” call before 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 in the parking lot located directly adjacent to the McDonalds’ parking lot.

“Upon arrival of our officers they did located several shell casings, but did not locate anyone who had been shot,” Asbell said. “Shortly thereafter we learned there was a gunshot victim at ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. That individual was apparently taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.”

Prior to the altercation and shots fired at Ahoskie Commons, Asbell said there was a fight involving juveniles in the parking lot at Hertford County High School. That fight occurred shortly after the conclusion of a basketball tournament.

“Typically, after any basketball game at our high school, the crowd tends to migrate to the shopping center and McDonalds,” Asbell noted. “We can’t say with any amount of certainty if the fight at the high school had anything to do with shots being fired at Ahoskie Commons.”

Asbell encouraged those with any information about the shooting to contact the Ahoskie Police Department at 252-332-5011.
