Even Santa may need to consider adding a few more layers to his normal wardrobe when he visits the Roanoke-Chowan area Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Christmas weekend will be cold, according to the National Weather Service. Dangerous wind chills are in the forecast for Friday and even after the winds die down the cold air will remain locked in place Saturday and Sunday.

Today (Thursday) will be the warmest period over the upcoming 72 hours with a high of 60 and an overnight low of 44. Rain is forecasted on and off for most of Thursday.

Friday will see some isolated rain showers possible in the morning hours with a high near 50. An arctic blast of air will arrive Friday afternoon where the local temperature will dive into the 20’s.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory from 6 am until 6 pm Friday for portions of northeast North Carolina and central, east central, north central, south central and southeast Virginia. West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Friday night’s low, under clear skies, will be 10 degrees.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for 7 pm Friday to 9 am Saturday. Wind chills as low as 5 below zero are possible. This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must venture outdoors make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

Christmas Eve (Saturday) will be sunny but very cold with a high of 29 and a low of 16.

Christmas Day (Sunday) will see mostly sunny skies with a high of 34 and an overnight low of 15

Daytime highs will gradually warm into the mid-40’s early next week under mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows are expected in the mid-20’s.
