POWELLSVILLE – Sadie Newbern Castello, age 94, passed away on December 8, 2022 at the Gates House Assisted Living of Gatesville, NC, with her family by her side.
Mrs. Castello was born in Bertie County, NC, on January 30, 1928, a daughter of the late Joseph James and Blonnie Fairless Newbern. Sadie was an active faithful member of Powellsville Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She worked as a seamstress for Blue Bell Manufacturing in Ahoskie for many years until their closure. Sadie loved gardening and cooking, being well known for her delicious cakes.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Carl Ray Castello; her sisters, Forrise N. “Blue” Fairless, and Betty Rae Castellow; her brothers, Kenneth Wayne Newbern, and Frank Dupree Newbern; a son-in-law, Larry Stevenson Hoggard, Jr.; and granddaughter-in-law, Karen Levinson.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Cheryl C. Levinson and husband, Stanley of Norfolk, VA, and Julia C. Godwin and husband, Wallace of Ahoskie, NC; her grandchildren, Tanya Levinson, Samuel Levinson, Carla Godwin, and Stacey Hoggard; great grandchildren, Michael Hoggard, Gavin Levinson and Andrew Levinson; and her sister, Faye Newbern Cobb of Murfreesboro, NC.
The family will receive friends at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, on Sunday, December 11, 2022, from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to services.
A celebration of life service will be held at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service Chapel in Ahoskie, on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC.
