Hawks fall in opening round against Crusaders

BELMONT, NC – The Chowan women’s soccer team saw their season come to a close with a 2-0 setback in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship on the road against Belmont Abbey on Wednesday evening.

Kirsten Peterson recorded six saves in the contest. Chowan was outshot 19-7 in the contest and 11-2 in on target attempts.

Mayara Engel attempted to put the Hawks on the board in the first minute, but her shot would miss high. Just over a minute later, Belmont Abbey would find the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders looked to add to their advantage, but Peterson made a save and the defense cleared a ball of the line.

In the 33′, Lieke Van den Akker recorded a shot that would be blocked and sent out for a corner kick.

Cristina Flores notched a shot on goal in the 37′ as her attempt was saved by the Belmont Abbey keeper, which preserved a 1-0 lead by the home team at intermission.

After a save early in the second half, Belmont Abbey extended their lead to 2-0 in the 57′ finding the top right corner.

The Chowan defense would make another clearing save as Peterson collected a couple of saves. Peterson would add a pair of saves in the 72′ and 74′.

Flores fired a shot in the 79′ that would miss to the left. Lillian DeLucca posted a shot off a free kick in the 83′ that would be blocked. DeLucca’s shot would be followed up by an attempt by Natasha Bailey that would be turned away.

Bailey sent a shot over the bar in the 86′.

Chowan finished the season with a 5-10-2 record.
