All public schools in Hertford County as well as Ridgecroft School are closing today (Tuesday) at 11:30 a.m. due to a threat.

HCPS and Ridgecroft sent out alerts to the parents of their students, advising them of the 11:30 a.m. dismissal.

Brunet Parker, Public Information Officer for Hertford County Public Schools, told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the threat did not single out one particular school.

“We have received information regarding a potential safety threat to our campuses,” Parker said in a statement that was sent to the parents. “Out of an abundance of caution, all schools will be dismissing at 11:30 a.m. today (Tuesday). We believe that this is the best action to take at this time while investigating.”

The statement added that HCPS is working closely with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Ahoskie Police Department, and Murfreesboro Police Department as well as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
