Chowan volleyball wins again

MURFREESBORO – Chowan’s volleyball team picked up their second sweep in a row to run their record to .500 in league play after their fourth straight league win with a 3-0 victory over Belmont Abbey at home on Saturday.

The Hawks, who improved to 8-13 overall and evened their league record at 5-5, won each of the three sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-22).

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the charge with 14 kills. Ellie Middleton collected 10 kills and added nine digs.

Diana Rodriguez posted 20 digs, while Hadley Prince tallied 12.

In the opening set, Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks on the board with a kill. Back-to-back kills by Chloe Putnam gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead. Middleton would spark a rally with a kill before Nia Baskin and Rosa-Martinez added a kill to force a timeout. Out of the break, Middleton tallied an ace and a kill along with a kill by Rosa-Martinez and Nyah Powers pushed the lead to 19-12. Middleton, Madison Hall, and Baskin finished off the set with a kill each.

Both teams traded points early in the second set as Middleton and Rosa-Martinez posted kills. Belmont Abbey would run their lead to 10-5 before Middleton collected a kill. BAC rattled off four straight points to lead 15-9 before the Hawks mounted a comeback. Baskin added a kill and a block as the Hawks used miscues by the Crusaders to cut the deficit to 15-14. Three kills by Rosa-Martinez handed the lead to the Hawks, 20-19. Powers, Putnam, and Middleton teamed up for a pair of blocks followed by kills by Middleton and Powers completed the comeback, 25-22.

Middleton started the scoring in the third set with a kill followed by a block by Hall and Baskin. Rosa-Martinez added a pair of kills along with one by Hall to level the score at 6-all. Putnam tallied a kill before the Crusaders moved in front 12-9. The Hawks would trail 17-14 before Powers started a run with a kill. Rosa-Martinez and Middleton added a kill before Powers notched a solo block. Sydney Ginaitt recorded a kill to even the score at 19-all. Rosa-Martinez finished off the set with four straight kills to give the Hawks the sweep.

Chowan hits the road to take on Barton, who the Hawks swept last week. First serve is slated for 6 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in Wilson.
