LINCOLN, PA. – Linebacker Montre Moore returned a fumble for a touchdown and defender Nic Wilson set up another score with a fumble recovery as Chowan edged past Lincoln, 16-14, here Saturday in a CIAA Northern Division clash.

The win allowed the Hawks to even their overall record at 3-3 (1-0 in the Northern Division; 3-1 in the conference) heading into this Saturday’s (Oct. 15) homecoming clash vs. Virginia State.

Moore along with Jakob Streeter and Moore paced the Chowan defense with eight tackles each. Streeter and Raydarius Freeman tallied 3.0 TFLs.

Nijere Peoples (66 yards) and Jordaan Bailey (58 yards) led Chowan’s ground game. Laurence King led the receivers with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Jake Ray added a critical 18-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 7-0 after one period of play, Chowan turned to its defense to get back in the game as Streeter forced a fumble, Moore to pick up the loose ball and race 73-yards for the game-tying touchdown.

Lincoln muffed the ensuing kick-off, which was recovered by Wilson at Lincoln’s 34 yardline. From there, quarterback Caleb Pierce found King for a 12-yard reception and the two hooked up again, this time on a seven-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 13-7 with just under eight minutes to play in the second quarter.

Later in the period, Freeman and Streeter each recorded a sack to stall a Lincoln drive. Jamae Blank sent the Hawks into the locker room with another sack to end the half.

After a scoreless third period, Rashad McKee found EJ Gatling for 26 yards to put the Hawks just outside of the redzone on the second snap of the fourth quarter. McKee scampered for 17 yards before the Hawks had to settle for a field goal. Jake Ray, normally a wide receiver, connected from 18-yards out with 9:48 remaining to put the Hawks up 16-7.

Lincoln would march down the field on a long pass play and find the endzone to cut the deficit to 16-14 with 8:11 remaining.

The Lions would threaten again, picking off a pass near midfield. Lincoln moved the ball into the redzone before a holding penalty and an intentional grounding penalty moved the Lions back to the Chowan 27. Lincoln would go for it on fourth down and 17 instead of attempting a 44-yard field goal.

Chowan took over on loss of downs and Peoples salted away the remaining 2:15 of the contest on the ground, picking up 34 yards on three carries.

Chowan returns home after a pair of road contest as the Hawks host Virginia State on Saturday, October 15 for Homecoming. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
