AHOSKIE – The investigation continues into a deputy-involved fatal shooting that took place near here Wednesday morning.

Bertie Sheriff John Holley said his officers responded around 10 a.m. to the Center Grove Road / Jernigan Swamp Road area of the county in reference to a possible suicide situation.

He added that the Aulander Police Department and Hertford County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

There, the officers encountered a female, armed with a weapon, outside her residence.

Holley said that deputies made several requests for the woman to drop the weapon, but she refused to heed those commands. He added that the woman walked towards the deputies, still holding the weapon, at which time the fatal shot was fired.

This morning (Thursday), the Sheriff said a Bertie County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in the fatal shooting.

The names of the deceased woman and the deputy have not yet been released.

Holley said that additional information will be forthcoming as an investigation is underway with the State Bureau of Investigation.
