Volleyball team opens

season with two wins

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.VA. – The Chowan volleyball team split the opening day of the Ram Rumble on Friday afternoon, picking up the win against Alderson Broaddus to cap off the day.

After suffered a 3-1 setback vs. Shepherd in the opening match, Chowan bounced back to defeat Alderson Broaddus by that identical score.

Over the course of both matches, Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the Hawks with 21 kills while adding 14 digs. Madison Hall tallied 14 kills, with Nia Baskin collecting 12 kills and Kolleen Priest posting 10 kills.

Alexa Woolson recorded 36 assists and 12 digs. Diana Rodriguez notched 32 digs, including a team-high 20 digs in the win over Alderson Broaddus.

On Saturday, Chowan defeated Dominican, 3-1.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Alexa Woolson notched their first double-doubles of the season. Rosa-Martinez posted a team-high 13 kills and 15 digs. Woolson posted 17 assists and 10 digs.

Diana Rodriquez paced the defense with 18 digs. Morgan Tucker collected 17 assists. Kolleen Priest notched a career-high eight kills. Haydon Ahlers chipped in with seven kills.

Chowan will look to continue the momentum as the Hawks travel to Petersburg, VA to compete in the Virginia State Trojan Classic on Sept. 2-3.

 

Women’s soccer falls

SALISBURY, NC – The Chowan women’s soccer team was unable to muster much offense as the Hawks dropped a 5-0 non-conference neutral site contest against Tampa on Saturday afternoon.

Nicole Mejia (two shots on goal) and Natasha Bailey (one shot) were the only offense for the Hawks

Kirsten Peterson recorded seven saves in goal for Chowan.

Chowan (0-2) will shift their focus to their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Hawks host nationally-ranked Concord. First touch is slated for 5 pm.

 

Men’s soccer handed loss

BANNER ELK, NC – The Chowan men’s soccer team grinded back from a 1-0 deficit to equalize in the final minutes before conceding the game-winner in a 2-1 defeat against Lander in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Tren Drexhage scored the first goal of the season for the Hawks as the equalizer in the 81′.

Dennis Bates and Jayce Graves recorded a shot in the contest.

Charlie Farrar notched four saves in the loss in goal.

Chowan (0-2) hits the road to take on nationally-ranked Tampa in a South Region match-up on Saturday, Sept. 3. First touch is slated for 7 pm.
