AHOSKIE – One person is in custody for the deadly shooting of a Murfreesboro woman.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes said that a local 16-year-old juvenile was arrested at around 10:30 pm Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Angie Britt.

That teen is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center in Greenville.

Britt died as the result of gunshot wounds she suffered while operating a vehicle on Boone Farm Road just outside the community of Union shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. She was transported to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where she died.

Hayes said the fatal shots were fired from another vehicle that was following Britt’s vehicle. He added that Britt – who had three passengers, all family members (ages 8, 10, and 16), in her vehicle at the time of the shooting – was not the target of the shooter or shooters.

“We’re still investigating and believe there are others involved,” Hayes said. “An innocent life was taken and small children were put in harm’s way. My heart goes out to the Britt and Eley families for their loss. We will work tirelessly until all those involved in this senseless act of violence are brought to justice.”
