AHOSKIE – While the COVID-19 pandemic put their traditional event on hold once again earlier this year, organizers of Hertford-Gates Relay for Life sought alternative measures to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

After a few months of brainstorming, they decided to stage a Food Truck Rodeo along with a luminary service on Aug. 12 at the Ahoskie Amphitheater.

“We have not been able to have our normal Relay event for two years,” said Winnie Matthews. “We wanted to have more this year than just a luminary service. We are hoping that since it is on Friday night, people can come out after work and bring the kids for supper and some fun and games.”

The event will take place from 4-8 p.m. The luminaries will be lit at 7 p.m. Golf carts will be available for those needing assistance to walk through and see the luminaries.

A Kid’s Walk and games will also be part of the activities.

Roanoke-Chowan Community Health Center and ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital will have their team tents set up.

Food trucks (with their menus shown in parenthesis) scheduled to take part in the event are as follows:

Grace’s Grille (Wings, Burgers, Club sandwich, Sandwiches, Chicken Salad, Turkey BBQ, Fish, Shrimp, Pork Chops, Patty Melt, Honey Bun Cake, Lemon Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Pudding)
