Hawks picked fifth overall in pre-season rankings

SALEM, VA. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) unveils the 2022 All-CIAA Preseason Football Team, as voted on by the CIAA Football Coaches Association and the Sports Information Directors Association, and the predicted order of finish as selected by the head football coaches.

The preseason team and predicted order were both announced during the CIAA’s annual football media day held July 20.

For the fourth consecutive season, Bowie State and Fayetteville State were picked by league coaches to repeat as Northern Division and Southern Division champions, respectively. The 2022 CIAA Football Championship Game is slated for Nov. 12 in Salem, VA (Salem Stadium).

Chowan, coming off their best season during the NCAA era, finished the 2021 season with a 7-3 record and a 4-3 clip in the CIAA Northern Division was selected to finish fifth overall and third in the Northern Division.

The Hawks collected five All-CIAA Preseason selections with CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year Isaac Anderson leading the way. Joining Anderson on the list were David Keck, All-CIAA First Team Offensive Lineman and Laurence King, All-CIAA Second Team Receiver. Adding to the selections were Jeremiah Smith (Tight End) and Simeon Burns (Defensive Back).

Bowie State’s 132 points and six first-place votes edged out Fayetteville State’s 132 points and three first-place markers. Virginia Union picked up two first-place predictions and Lincoln (PA) received a first-place vote, as well.

Chowan opens the season under the lights of Garrison Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Barton.
