WINDSOR – A Martin County woman was killed while another was injured in a single vehicle accident near here Wednesday afternoon.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified Brianna Ewell, age 22 of Williamston, as the person that lost their life.

According to a report filed by NCHP Trooper J.V. Reid, Ewell was operating a Toyota passenger car on NC 308 (Governor’s Road) less than one-half mile west of Windsor at the time of the accident (1:25 p.m.).

The report showed that the vehicle veered off the right side of the road, at which time Ewell apparently overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross the centerline and travel off the left side of the road where it impacted a tree.

Reid’s report listed speed as a contributing factor to the accident.

A passenger in the vehicle, 18-year-old Johlanda Wiggins of Williamston, was injured and was transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

Wednesday’s fatal accident raised the 2022 death toll to six in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). It marked the first motor vehicle fatality of the year in Bertie County.
